We had a dog named Fiona. She was a mongrel with brown hair, long legs and firey red eyes. When our helper kuya Billy brought her with him to our house, my mom fell in love with her and decided to adopt her. She was named Michelle by kuya Billy at first, but I changed it to Fiona since I want all our dogs to be named after our favorite cartoon or animated characters. We already have Lilo and Stitch.
At first I didn't like Fiona, I thought she was a bad dog. She likes to take food from our dining table, and to me she just looks really scary. She was a smart dog too, and can climb a 4 feet long wooden fence and open the door from the kitchen. But the whole bad impression changed when she gave birth to her first batch of puppies. I noticed that she was very protective and a good mother of the 5 puppies. I compared her with Lilo who was a terrible mother. Usually, her puppies won't survive and sometimes she sleeps on them.
Fiona was different. Although she loves to go out from the house to scout some food, she always comes back home to feed her puppies. One rainy night her puppies almost drowned because the water flushed them to the canal but Fiona cried so hard and woke us in the middle of the night. I woke Ernel right away so he can check and luckily he was there on time. All 5 puppies were saved and are already adopted by good people.
After a while, Fiona gave birth to her 2nd batch of puppies again. I blogged about it here. Still, Fiona had proved to us what a good mother she was. When we bringhome opochero bones, she makes sure that the puppies get them first before having some for herself. Sometimes, she's like a bird. She gets the food from the outside and put it in her mouth, and spits it out to feed it to her puppies. Any food we give her, she gives them first to her puppies. She always made sure that the puppies were clean. I really admired Fiona as a mother, she was more of a mother than other human beings I know.
Sadly, 2 days ago, my brother got home tired from work. He's driving a big black car and ran over Fiona that night. Good thing I was asleep when this happened and didn't hear her cry in pain before life left her. I think it was a sad ending because she suffered for a little while. I just didn't think she deserved that kind of death. It would've been disturbing for me if I heard her cry, and these things depresses me.
People at home always find it hard telling me bad news especially if it is about death of a pet, a friend, a loved one. I even cried when my yaya's nephew died from drowning. They told me about the news while I was in a good mood for jokes. My brother was making jokes until Fiona was brought up. I can't take bad news, especially death. We lost 2 dogs this year already. What we have left are Lilo, Stitch and the 4 puppies she left us with. I know there's such a place as dog heaven. I know dogs have souls. They are not just animals, they are man's best friend, sometimes much more valuable than a person. At least a dog will never give up on you.
